2 Purim Wisdom Every weekday morning at 6.30, after my Opapa would finish the recital of his daily Tehilim portion from 4.30 to 6.30am in our livingroom, l would accompany him to the morning minyan. Now my friends, I was a careful and clever fellow, always alert to the truth contained in the wise Purim limerick that brought me in endless groschen when the most joyous of the Jewish festivals rolled around: GUTTEN PIREM MALECH WIE ICH GEI -- FAL-ECH FAL-ECH OF DE SHTEINER CERBRECH ECH MIR DI BEINER!!! My Good Purim Angel Wherever I go I fall, Should I fall on stones Do I break my bones!!! Being that clever and careful fellow I claim to be my good friends you will not find me taking chances. Oh no!!! You will not find me taking chances. If I was careful when I was young and rubbery, elastic and springy to prevent my falling on stones so as not to break my bones, all the more now, in my golden years!!! I will use all the preventatives, utilize all the precautions especially if they are offered to me on a silver platter studded with brilliant diamonds to assure my physical safety, and my capacity to spring back to some of my youthful abilities that assure my youthful spirit its youthful encasement (Body). No! No!!! I won t allow myself to get lazy and miss going at least once a week to an hourly physical exercise, in our community center, to give my aging body what it needs to keep above the class which would approximate the group classified (chas-ve-chalila) as decrepit. With a wonderful physical exercise class available and a wonderful teacher, to bypass that marvelous opportunity of NOT BREAKING YOUR BONES SHOULD YOU FALL ON STONES especially with the very special Purim limerick reminder available would be a terrible boost, a veritable triumph to wicked Haman. No. no. No Jew who wants to continue his Jewish existence can afford that!!! A gutten Purim to you all, sisters and brothers, our Esthers and Mordechais and much joy for all your loved ones, and our whole marvelous People Israel!!! Rabbi Ervin Birnbaum משולחנו של הנשיא חג פורים שמח! אחרי כארבע שנים בתפקיד יש קצת אור בקצה המנהרה. התברכנו לקבל חברים חדשים שתורמים המון לקהילה וליופי של המקום. לאחר שנים רבות אפשר לראות במדובר בבית כנסת כאשר נכנסים לבניין. יש שילוט. יש קידושים כמעט כל יום שבת. אם נמשיך בפעילויות אלו הכוללים פסטיבל סרטים,טיולים,הרצאות...יש סיכוי להמשך התפעול של בית ישראל. חייבים להיות אופטימיים ולשכנע חברים ושכנים להגיע ולהתקבל כחברים חדשים. אני מודה לכל חברי הועד ולכל הצוות בשבתות ובחגים,לנשים הנפלאות אשר עוזרות בקידושים,לבוריס,שרה והרב ארוין והדסה ברנבאום והמשפחה. ממני,מרעייתי וממשפחתי, איחולים לבביים לפורים ולפסח שמח לכולכם אהרון קריזר 2

3 Happy Purim! After about four years in my current position I begin to feel that there is some light at the end of the tunnel. In the past couple of years we were blessed to receive new friends who contribute a lot to the community and the beauty of the garden and the sanctuary by their attentions to the plants and donations of new ones. After many years it is possible to really see that this is a synagogue when entering the building because of the new sign many thanks, Natalie. There are special kiddushim almost every Shabbat and if we continue with all the activities, which include a film festival, tours, lectures and all the holidays... there is a good chance to continue successfully as a kehilla. You must be optimistic and convince friends and neighbors to come and join as new members. I would like to thank all members of the committee and all the staff on Shabbat and holidays, the wonderful women who help make, serve and clear away after the Kiddushim. As always, we thank Boris, Sara and Rabbi Ervin and Hadassa Birnbaum and all their family for the many, many ways they contribute to the well-being of Bet Israel and its members. My wife and family and I wish you all both Purim Sameach and a Happy and Kosher Pessach. 4 BICA Come to the Purim --- let s have some fun!!! Annual Purim Party, following the Megilla Reading on Leyl Purim (Wednesday 20 March) at 5:30pm. Come in the funniest costume you can think of! We ll provide the noise-makers so that you can make a BIG noise!!! Then come upstairs to the Social Hall, and we ll have a bang-up Bingo Party (donation 10sh), with mishloach manot prizes, hamentashen and hot drinks. And, for the young and the young-at-heart, a MAGICIAN! Don t miss it!!! We invite everybody, on 12 April, to our next wonderful and uplifting Musical Kabbalat Shabbat, led by Aiton and The Birnbaum Boys, and followed by a bang-up Seudat Shabbat (festive dinner). Dinner: Members 30sh Guests 60 sh. The service will begin at 6pm, and we urge you to please join us for the service. We will have the pleasure of a talk by Patricia O Neill, with a wonderful slide-show, of her Semester at Sea going around the world while studying. This will be at one of our upcoming BICA Teas, so keep an eye out not to miss this! Let s take this opportunity to give a GREAT BIG THANK-YOU to our wonderful and dedicated ladies of our Russian-speaking Congregation, who selflessly and tirelessly prepare, serve and clear up, week after week, for the kiddushim that we all enjoy so much. And --- another big thank-you, to Baruch and Edith Maor, who always see to it that the Russian ladies have all the necessary ingredients to make those delicious kiddushim possible. The BICA Va ad As many of you know, our synagogue, Bet Israel, has been running a project providing a group of volunteer English tutors for a school in Netanya. For many years once a week five of our members and one person from Shearim Netanya drive to Aharon Davidi School in the neighborhood of Agamim. There we spend several hours teaching children who are in need of encouragement and help in their English studies. Yesterday Jenny, the English teacher with whom we work, informed us that we would be helping her conduct a lesson with a group of ten children who are in a first grade class of children with special needs. That means that each of these children has some kind of learning disability and needs special attention. Each of us had a turn at teaching the pupils a song, and when my turn came, I noticed that one of the girls was very small and seemed to me the size of a kindergarten child. I asked her her name and she replied, Emily. Jenny had told us that this little girl had not had a chance to go to kindergarten two years earlier because she had had cancer that stunted her growth, and she had spent a lot of time in hospitals in the U.S. where she had undergone five operations on her brain. 4

5 And then the asimon yarad! ( I suddenly understood), and I said to Jenny, one day about 3 years ago the grandfather of a little girl named Emily came to our synagogue and pleaded with our leaders and members to donate money to save his little granddaughter who had cancer and needed operations in the U.S. that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Could this be our Emily? Jenny was excited and immediately left the room and ran to verify the identity of this Emily. She returned a few minutes later with a big smile on her face: yes, indeed, this was our Emily whose life we at Bet Israel had helped to save! What an enormous feeling of satisfaction and pride filled me and our other volunteers! A few minutes later when the children were about to finish their day at school, Jenny led me downstairs to meet the Saba who had come to Bet Israel a few years ago pleading for help to save Emily. I greeted this Saba and explained to him who we are. He remembered the generous contributions made by our synagogue to save his grandchild and over and over he repeated, Todah, todah! with a warm, grateful smile on his face as he accompanied Emily to take her home. I had often thought about Emily and had wondered what happened to her, but I was afraid to ask, fearing the worst. We never had any further contact with the Saba or the parents so we had no way of knowing if the generosity of members of Bet Israel had helped to cure Emily. Now I thought to myself, what are the chances of meeting the survivor in such an unexpected way? Was it serendipity or was there someone up there guiding Emily and me to meet under such circumstances? Of course we ll never know, but it made all of us including Jenny and two teachers aides who were present stand in awe. I felt deeply grateful knowing that we had helped to save this child s life. One just never knows how one s gift of tzedakah will reverberate and bring about life-changing effects in a person s life. I couldn t help but think how grateful we must be to be able to give help, monetary or another kind, to other people who are in some kind of need, to be among those who give, and not among those who have to take. Hadassa Birnbaum Bet Israel s Tree of Life commemorate the living We are indebted to Bernie Burg ז"ל and Mo Harvey for creating the beautiful Tree of Life, which hangs between the doors at the entrance to the sanctuary. Now we all have a way to commemorate the living, whether it be loved ones, family or friends, or special events in our lives. The cost is modest: NIS150 per leaf. Samples: 5
